Baby Carriers make life with a toddler easier!

Many baby carriers will allow you to carry your toddler up to 35-40lbs depending on the carrier. But it really depends on whether your toddler let’s you carry him/her that way still. Usually by this age, they are very independant and strong minded. What I love about a baby carrier is that it gives you the option to carry your toddler once they get tired. Unlike a stroller that is bulky and big, you can put your favorite baby carrier into your diaper bag (or even wear it without your toddler in it) until your little one gets tired.

At the toddler stage, most kids are at least 25lbs and up. This means that without the carrier, you would only be able to carry them for a little while before getting exhausted. The baby carrier also allows them to fall asleep and be soothed the same way they were when they were infants.

My preference is the Ergo Baby Carrier as it really distributes the weight across my hips. Also it allows your toddler to straddle your hips making it more comfortable for them as well as you. My toddler now likes to ride on my back when he gets tired. It allows him to look around and still be apart of the action even though he is tired. And when he falls asleep, I just get someone to help me put on the sleeping hood so that his neck is supported.

Also, when my toddler decides he wants to walk instead of being carried, I have him walk beside me holding a strap of the carrier. He has hit the stage where some times he will hold my hand and sometimes he wants to be independant and just walk on his own. I give him the option of my hand or the strap of the carrier. It is a little way I can empower him to feel independant but still have him close by and safe.

The Best Baby Carriers to ease your stress at the airport

Traveling with your baby may initially seem overwhelming or stressful. But if you plan and go well prepared, you should be able to arrive at your destination ready to enjoy your vacation. One of the key components to being prepared is packing the best baby carrier for the airport.

With crowded airports and narrow walk ways, often times a stroller isn’t your best choice. You also want to make sure your hands are free (even from pushing a stroller) to manage all the small things you need to get in and out of your bag when you are at the airport.  The carrier you should be looking for, should be both compact, easy to put on and take off and also be comfortable for your baby.

The front baby carriers would be my suggestion for the best baby carrier to take on a journey. The wraps are great for at home use, but are just not practical. Imagine being in a hectic situation and trying to wrap a bolt of material around you. Also, baby wraps tend to trap more heat and may cause your infant to be uncomfortable after a long period of time in them.

The backpack carriers, although great for hikes, are not so good as they aren’t that compact. Furthermore, in a busy airport environment, it is often better to have your baby in front of you where you can interact and make sure little hands don’t touch things they aren’t suppose to be touching.

The reason the front baby carriers are the best baby carriers for traveling are because they can be taken on and off with ease, they roll up compact for packing, they give more ventilation for warmer temperatures, you can interact with your baby to keep them as calm as possible and of course, they are comfortable for your baby to fall asleep in.

Hopefully on your next trip, you will find that with your favorite carrier in hand, you will have a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Hotslings Baby Carrier

Hotslings Baby CarrierI have to admit, I didn’t really like this sling when I first got it. My son was so tiny that I felt he was getting squished.  I used it maybe once or twice and then put it away. When my daughter was born, she was a bit bigger and we used it for about a week or two…but again, felt like she was getting squished. As I started to blog about baby infant carriers, I dug out my “retired” slings and gave them a shot again. After writing about the benefits of the pouch slings, I think I “re-learned” how to properly use one.

Now, this sling is probably one of my favorite to carry in my diaper bag. It folds up neatly and is compact. It is super easy to use now that my daughter is 23lbs and can straddle my hip while I put her in. I even tried it on my son who is 26lbs and much taller, it is was great. For this price, it is well worth it… as well, the designed patterns make you the new funky mom on the block :)

This is what the manufacturer has to say:

Hotslings pouches are an innovative design that combine fashion with function. Just because you are a mom (or dad) now doesn’t mean you will be stuck with bears, bunnies, blue plaid and pink gingham. Nor will you be stuck with a front pack that only is good for your baby’s first few months while it pulls mercilessly on your upper back. 0-37 lbs.

City chic meets modern mama as you turn heads with your bold style. The design of this cotton sateen sling meets just about every wardrobe change you can think of and the Original Hotslings leg padding means you and your baby will never miss a step. 97% cotton, 3% spandex. Best Front Baby Carrier: Baby Bjorn Original

Among all baby carriers, seven reviews agree the original Baby Bjorn is the best. Babies can face in or out, and the carrier allows parents to simply unsnap the front section to remove sleeping babies. The straps adjust easily and take pressure off of the back.

The Baby Bjorn can hold newborns if they are at least 21-inches long and eight pounds, with a maximum weight of 22 pounds. Although another version of the Baby Bjorn, the Baby Bjorn Active (*est. $120), adds more lumbar support for longer trips, the Kelty Kangaroo has more features and is as comfortable.

The primary drawback here is the high price for a carrier that can’t be used once your baby reaches 22 pounds, which could be less than a year. The results presented here were synthesized from seventeen separate reviews on the front baby carrier. According to Consumer Search, a resource that ties together the reviews of other publications, the most honest and fair reviews of baby carriers are written by parenting experts, pediatricians, child development experts and, of course parents.

Also included were reviews from Consumer Reports, Epinions.com, and Amazon.com.When it comes to traditional soft baby carriers, reviews say parents are really better off spending the money on the Baby Bjorn (*est. $80). Even though they look a lot alike, reviews say the Baby Bjorn is vastly more comfortable and convenient than the Evenflo Snugli Classic (*est. $20).

The basic model, Snugli Classic, doesn’t get the best ratings for comfort on Epinions.com, but many parents prefer it for the low price. The Snugli Comfort Vent (*est. $30) has a zippered vent to keep the baby cool, and it gets decent reviews on both Epinions and Amazon.com.

The Snugli By My Side (*est. $50) gets better reviews because it adapts to three different positions and has dual side-entry buckles, though some reviewers found them difficult to use. A common complaint from parents about all front carriers is the lack of back support. I found the Baby Bjorn Original selling for $49 and the Baby Bjorn Active selling for $89. A substantial savings on both top rated carriers.

Balboa Baby Adjustable Sling by Dr. Sears – Flower

Balboa Baby Adjustable Sling by Dr. Sears - Flower

This is one of my favorite patterns. It is the easy to use Balboa Baby Adjustable Sling by Dr. Sears. You can now be hands-free and hip all at the same time with this versatile, adjustable sling. The one-size-fits-all design grows with your little one (6-25 lbs.) thanks to the multiple carrying positions and the adjustable padded strap. By evenly distributing weight across your shoulders and back, it ensures a comfy ride for you and your baby. Made of super-soft fabric, the deep-pocket style allows you to move freely, and the padded elastic trim keeps baby safe, comfy, and cozy. The best thing about this sling is the little pocket in the front that you can put your bank card or some cash. It makes it a great sling for running errands or for a stroll to the coffee shop.  (To read more from Amazon click here)

Babywearing helps dads bond with their newborns

baby wearing
Image by sierraromeo [sarah-ji] via Flickr

Dads wanting to bond usually help out by diaper changing or midnight feeding in the newborn days. Furthermore, if you have chosen to breastfeed, it is usually mom that gets up in the middle of the night.  So Babywearing is one of the best ways to bond with a newborn.

There is always a natural attachment between mom and child. So in the early months, I was worried that my husband would feel left out. That’s when we discovered the joys and benefits of babywearing.

I always felt comfortable even in the early months when they went out for a walk in our baby carrier. In the afternoons when I needed to rest from the long nights, I knew my son would sleep on their walks. Even if my son woke up and was fussy, I knew my husband would be able to soothe him without having to wake me.

Babywearing also allowed my husband to do other things while caring for my son. He was able to tidy up or work on the computer with him attached. We didn’t have to worry about our son getting into something dangerous or fussing because he wanted to be held.

During those marathon teething days or when he was sick and needed to be held for hours at a time, babywearing was how we made it through. Those days usually coincided with irregular naps during the day. This meant a really cranky baby, so we would just go for a walk and my husband would carry him until he fell asleep.

We could also venture into any restaurant and not worry about him fussing. Even at our first large wedding we attended as a new family, I was worried our son would be “that baby” that cried through the vows. But instead, he was perfectly calm and asleep throughout it as we swayed with him.

There is definitely not one carrier that is perfect for all babies or all dads. You need to make sure you consider who will be using the carrier (height and body type), where you will going with it (at home, on a hike, to the store). And also, what type of climate or season you will be using the carrier.  But once dad find one that fits, he will discover that babywearing can bring wonders to calming your baby, be a bonding experience and also bring a little peace into your lives.

Infant Carrier saves the day at Christmas Craft Shows!

Crafts fair @ London!
Image by Ei! Kumpel via Flickr

With Christmas Crafts shows popping up all over town, everyone is out shopping for beautiful handmade crafts and art. Craft shows have become a popular way for consumers to tap into the handmade and unique products industry. Craft Shows are no longer selling just crocheted items or pom-pom snowmen… mom entrepreneurs and artisans are heading into this market to sell their latest invention and creations.

You will find everything from beautiful and trendy handmade bibs and clothing for your baby to toys made out of organic material. However, with the frenzy of shoppers, you will also find that pushing your stroller will be almost impossible. Whether you are a shopper or an exhibitor at one of these Craft Shows, a good infant carrier will save the day!

A good Infant carrier will give you both your hands free as well soothe your child during the hustle and bustle of shoppers, holiday music and bright lights of the different booths. To make sure you are well prepared, pack a light snack for both you and your baby (if they are not still nursing). For toddler aged children, packing some small toys to entertain them is always important.

Most styles will have places you can either attach the toy so that it doesn’t fall onto the ground. If not, I usually purchase the link-rings and hook the toy to the carrier or my belt loop. It is important to pack a few toys as their attention span is usually short.

Often times, the backpack carriers are the best as it puts your child up a little bit higher so that they can see. Also, there is a lot of storage in them so that you can put all your little purchases in the different compartments. My favorite is still the Ergo baby carrier as I have the option to have my child on the front or the back of me.

As a past exhibitor in these types of shows, I know that our infant carrier definitely saved the day and was an important part of our booth. It meant that we could stand for hours at these shows selling while my infant slept calmly because I was carrying him. Also, when it came time to nurse him, I was able to do it discreetly within the carrier.

Hope this year, before you venture out to the Crafts Shows, you pack your favorite infant carrier.

Playtex Hip Hammock Standard Black/Black

Playtex Hip Hammock Standard Black/BlackI mentioned this carrier on Halloween night a few days ago.  But I thought I’d do a review as we have had so many people just love this baby carrier.

The Playtex Hip Hammock is not recommended for a newborn and it isn’t the tradition sling carrier. Instead, it is to help aid you carrying your baby on your hip. It is both compact and light. Therefore, once rolled up, it is good for traveling. Unlike some of the carriers with a lot of straps or buckles, this carrier has been known for its ease to get on and off.   Some of the bad reviews don’t take into account that it isn’t meant to replace your other baby carriers, instead it is only meant to aid you in holding your toddler on your hip.

This is what the manufacturer has to say:

Preferable to a stroller in crowded public areas, this child carrier holds baby right next to a parent at a comfortable level for viewing her surroundings. Unlike many other carriers, this one balances baby on one hip instead of directly in front of the body. The benefits are that it is easier to walk or do household tasks without baby’s legs limiting Mom’s motion or her body blocking Mom’s reach. In addition, the side-carrying design is much easier on the back.  (To read more, see their amazon page …)

Hip Carriers for a Happy Halloween night

A pumpkin carved into a Jack-o'-lantern for Ha...

Image via Wikipedia

Happy Halloween. The pumpkins are carved and lit. The scary music is playing and all the kids are dressed up and ready to go! What happens when you have a child that is old enough to go treat-or-treating and an infant who doesn’t quite walk but wants to be apart of the action? You take them out in a baby hip Carrier.

The baby hip carrier, like the Platex hip hammock, is the perfect type of carrier to use. It allows your infant be sitting on your hip and apart of the action. The best thing also is that on a cool Halloween night, the warmth of your body will kept them warm.

Using this baby hip carrier or your favorite one on nights where you will be walking a lot really helps you back and arms. It is hard to slow down and just relax with your infant when you have a toddler ready to go. Baby carriers really give you the hands free option to be there for both kids. Especially when there is a very heavy bag of candy to be carried ! Enjoy the evening and be safe.

Baby Backpack

With all the different choices on the market for the best baby backpack carrier, it is often difficult to decide on whether it is better to buy an external frame or internal frame pack to carry your baby.  To help you choose, here are some of the benefits of both:

For External Frames

  1.    These baby backpack carriers are built to carry a lot of weight. Besides the weight of your child, you can also add on your water, first aid kit and extra clothes or diapers. These packs are meant to carry large and heavier loads for longer distances.
  2.  The frame itself allows for increased ventilation as the padding is not touching your back. This keeps you cooler in the summer and allows for extra layers in the winter.
  3.  It is easier to properly load a back backpack carrier with an external frame.

For Internal frames

  1.  These backs have a tighter fit, which allows the pack to contour to your spine. This gives the baby a slightly closer feeling.
  2.    For very active sports, internal frames give more stability when participating in activities that require independent hand movement like skiing or hiking in areas you may need to get up and down and bend.
  3.   Since the back is closer to your body, this lowers the centre of gravity and gives a more balanced feeling. This is especially important during high speed activities.

Whether you choose an external frame or an internal frame, it is more personal preference vs. quality of product. However, most internal frames are more affordable in price. Some of the top names in the baby backpack carrier choices are the Kelty, REI or Deuter brand packs. All these brands usually offer both external frame or an internal frame packs.
