Baby Backpack Carrier – 10 tips on hiking with your baby

1. The best way to carry your baby on a hike is using a baby backpack carrier. This allows you to see your feet and take careful steps as you hike. Also, make sure you check that your pack is adjusted to your measurements before you start your hike.
2. Even if your baby is old enough to hold up his/her head, it is important to bring a small blanket to prop up their neck as many children fall asleep as they are soothed by the rocking motion of the hike and the fresh air.
3. Regardless of the length of your hike, bring clean diapers, wipes and water. Most of the baby backpack carriers have small pockets or carriers so that you don’t have to bring an extra backpack or bag with you.
4. It is important that you have the proper foot gear when hiking. You need to find hiking shoes or boots that have both good traction and ankle support. Even on hot summer days, you can find moisture on rock surfaces (usually in the morning or in shady areas) that end up making them very slick.
5. Whether you get natural bug dope or the stuff with deet, make sure you bring it and use it. Bugs are attracted to your scent once you start to perspire.
6. Make sure everyone is wearing sunscreen 20-30mins prior to heading onto the trail. Also reapply once you have been outside for more than 2-3 hours.
7. Although it may be a hot day, always bring extra clothing or a wind/rainproof poncho or cover. Weather can turn quickly and you don’t want to be caught out in the woods without the proper gear with your baby.
8. Know your surroundings by keeping your eyes open to anything ahead of you on the path, but also on the sides. With your baby’s legs dangling on the side, you want to make sure that their legs don’t get scratched by branches.
9. Always bring extra water. In both summer and winter, you need to constantly hydrate both yourself and your baby.
10. It is always best to hike with another adult. But when this is not possible, make sure someone else knows where you are going and what time you are expected back. If I am about to go on a hike without my husband, I usually call him to let him know as we heading into the trail and then call after we get out of the trail. If something happens, like you fall or twist your ankle, your baby will not be able to go get help for you!
